Supporting materials for the ILSAC GF-7 / API SQ transition are available for download. Below are key highlights to help guide your understanding of the GF-7 update:
Categories of ILSAC GF-7: GF-7A and GF-7B
- GF-7A includes viscosity grades such as 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30, and will continue to
display the traditional starburst symbol. - GF-7B includes lower viscosity grades such as 0W-16 featuring the API Shield symbol. These are specifically intended for engines designed to use ultra-low viscosity oils.
GF-7 offers significant improvements and enhancements in:
- Engine durability and wear protection, including enhanced timing chain wear resistance
- Improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention
- Reduced low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), especially critical for modern turbocharged and gasoline
direct injection (GDI) engines - Improved high-temperature performance, piston cleanliness and deposit control
- Works with the Phillips 66 High Mileage Booster to provide enhanced protection, while
providing a GF-7 fully licensed high mileage oil change
Backward Compatibility
GF-7A oils are fully backward compatible with all previous GF-6A, GF-5, and earlier specifications, ensuring continued protection for existing vehicles.
Minimal Material Number Changes
To ensure minimal disruption, Phillips 66® and Kendall® material numbers will stay the same, with only their descriptions changing. The full synthetic and synthetic blend product series name and structure will remain the same. The Valor 0W-20 and 5W-30 series will remain dexos™ 1 – Gen 3 approved.
